Viswas at North

V.W.Chitnis on Sitar, myself on Tabla at the North Theatre in Danville, Virginia. Photos by Adam Weatherford.

This is the home page for Chris Johnson... multi-instrumentalist, photographer, air balancer and audio alchemist.

Here I post my ongoing experiments into the world of Frequencies, both Aural and Visual.

For the month of April my most recent photographic works are on display in the Bean Traders Coffee Art Gallery on 9th St. in Durham. Subjects range from still life macro-photography to portraits from last years trip to Algiers. Check out the PHOTO tab to see some of those pictures.

My first experimental video Tabla lesson has now been on Google Video and YouTube for a whole year. Thanks for all the nice comments from around the globe! Go to the LINKS tab. Also, I've starting posting the first in an ongoing series of Audio Files aimed at helping students of classical Indian music. To start, I have sequenced a Lehara written by my teacher John Heitzenrater. A Lehara is basically a fixed melody that lasts for one cycle of the Tala and acts as a metronome. For now I'm trying to make all files 10 minutes long as this can help regulate and inspire practice times. Also, there are loops of the inevitable Tampura, the drone instrument commonly heard in the backgrond of most classical Indian music. Check it out on the MUSIC tab.

No trees were killed in the production of this website. However a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
